Vane the Alchemist
Resolve level: 0
-Appearance: This man walks the streets with his head down and eyes avoiding other people’s gazes. He is dressed in torn trousers and an old cloak. He clatters as he walks as he’s wrapped in chains. His right hand shackled tightly against his chest. Two iron locks tie him in his self made bondage. Yet he walks as a free man, however not lawfully...
Age: 29
Sex: Male
Physical Description: Unkempt but not malnourished man with pale skin and smooth dark hair combed back. One could mistake him for a poor beggar, however this appearance is not forever lasting.
Attire: Torn beggars clothing, buckled cloak and heavy shackles wrapped around him
-Biography: Once a respected Alchemist, now a fugitive of the law and a man with a terrible secret
Quirks:
Meditator - Although alchemy was Vane’s profession, he did pick up some buddhist and christian text in his scholarly life. Since keeping down his beast for his and others sake became important to survival, Vane found the best tool was his own mind. In quiet moments, he takes the opportunity to cross his legs and sink deep into thoughts and mindfulness. Even in beast form, part of him is still conscious and capable of transforming back.
Sharp senses - His condition does give him some perks besides the physical strength. Even in human form, Vane experiences sharper senses. His hearing and smell have improved nowadays, making him more aware of his environment. His night vision is better too, however he still sees better in the light. Unfortunately this also makes him more sensitive to bright lights, bad smells and loud noises.
Sickly - If his condition wasn’t dangerous enough, it also makes him uncomfortable in his own body. His transformations hurt his muscles and his own blood feels like poison. His beast side has no regard to cleanliness or risk of contamination while sinking his teeth into meat of monsters, cattle and swinefolk. While this kind of food satisfies the fiend, it leaves Vanes with terrible stomach aches and diseases.
Alien hand syndrome - His dominant right hand is unfortunately controlled more by the beast so Vane keeps it shacked at all times. This means he does almost everything with his left hand, which makes him clumsy. Sometimes his right hand literally has a mind of its own and completes tasks without Vane’s acknowledgement. Usually tearing and grabbing objects or people nearby.
Backstory Synopsis: Experiment with eldritch blood went horribly wrong and now Vane walks the land as half-man half-fiend. He had slaughtered many innocent people and cattle on his way and now seeks absolution and justice for his sins or even better… a cure for his condition.
Full Backstory: Vane was not always a poor beggar on the streets nor was he always cursed. He used to be a well respected scholar in his youth. He studied sciences, languages, religious texts and eventually he managed to find a rich patron and work as their personal alchemist. His goal was the same as many other alchemists. To create gold out of nothing. However during his research, he required some… fascinating scrolls and forbidden samples of the eldritch kind. Vane realized that with these tools his research may not result in riches, but it could result in power. Besides what use is gold in a world that marches ever closer to its doom. So he mixed the powders and boiled the chemicals and infected himself with distilled blood. However he underestimated the power of the fiend’s blood and after pain, struggle and screaming, the world had gone blank. He had woken up again in his patrons house with blood and guts spilled on the floor. His patron, their servants, cats and children slaughtered and his own hands covered in blood. In realization of his sins, Vane fled the town, leaving his home and life behind. For years he had fled from town to town, leaving nothing but destruction and horror stories of the monster that culls at night. Eventually his road led to Hamlet, where he hoped to find absolution for his sins… or even a cure for his terrible condition.
Misc. Notes: He is known to be stinky if for nothing else.
-Skills & Equipment:
Weapons: Human form: Iron chains. Beast mode: Powerful jaw and claws
Armor: No armor however his chains offer some protection
Other gear: Deep pockets for carrying everything and a nice iron buckle to keep his cloak up
Strengths: He has an iron will when it comes to controlling the beast within. He accomplishes this with focused, quiet meditation. He is willing to share his knowledge with others too, making him an excellent partner in withstanding the mental struggle of adventuring. When calm in mind, Vane is able to transform in and out of his beast at will, however this doesn’t have its consequences. But while in beast mode, he can attack even the largest monster without fear. The beast as he calls it is a big fiendish monster with incredible strength and speed. His claws are like daggers and his strength is capable of tearing rib cages open. Even though the two halves are in constant battles for dominance, they still share the same body and both have a strong will to survive. Vane has noted that even in his sleep, he could feel the beast protecting him.
Weaknesses: Despite nowadays being an unlawful beggar, Vane occasionally thinks too highly of himself due his scholarly knowledge. In stressful situations he may think his curse is actually a blessing and he is to be praised for it. However when Vane is most proud or at his weakest, his beast side is quick to remind him who’s in control. The beast may appear sometimes unwillingly in very inconvenient times. When in control the fiend hungers for flesh, organs and incredible violence. However Vane’s human side has a weak stomach and cannot stand certain sights or smells like rotting corpses. He can be very overstimulated by lights, loud noises and crowds too. His transformation into the beast, although useful, comes with terrible consequences. Afterwards his muscles ache and veins burn from the inside. Whatever terrible thing the monster ate has to be digested by his poor stomach. His whole body is in weak condition after all, making the transformation costly. All of this weighs him down already, but he also has to deal with the stigma of being an abomination and a criminal. The men and women of church don’t trust a man partnering with a fiend and many towns have shunned him due to his dangerous nature. Vane never intended to hurt anyone and is often in denial of the crimes he has committed, however he understands to keep himself away from the innocent to protect others.
His smallest problem is that although his human side fits well into clothes and armors, his beasts tears any boots and shirts very quickly, so it’s just a waste of good leather and cloth
