Van's Characters:
If you're here, it's because you've clicked on the link in my signature! I like to roleplay all sorts of different people, from old ladies to teenagers. They tend to be more mundane and non-magical, but I am partial to playing a magical healer on occasion, too.
So here they are, in chronological order from when I've created them. Those with a strike-through have died, and those with a grey name are no longer being roleplayed, but are still (as far as the characters know) alive.
Herbard: Crusader
About: My very first character was a crusader named Herbard! He was in his late 20s and was wounded in his very first battle in the Crusades; the infection caused him to be sent away to die at home. When his wife nursed him back to full health, Herbard left without a trace to pursue glory in the Darkest Estate that he never had the opportunity to find in the Crusades.
Death: His inexperience and lack of caution caused him to die on his second expedition, where he was liquified by a Flesh Golem.
Tilly: Scout | Read the full character sheet here!
About: Initially a side character, Tilly wound up being apart of almost everything that went down in the Hamlet and outlived Herbard. She's the longest-running character currently in the roleplay and she has seen it all; it's difficult to surprise her nowadays.
Now she is retired! With an impending marriage and a baby on the way! Not too bad for a side character. :^)
Ezra Margo: Brigand
About: Just a 20-something-year-old bandit, intended to be a short-lived character. He's good with a gun, but is shy to the point of speechlessness. Thankfully, listening ears tend to benefit those with his profession.
Death: The brigand leader made an example of him by shoving a broken bottle down his throat.
Hugo Sieger: Brigand
About: Another brigand; he's a bit dull. Picks his nose publicly and all. He was smart enough to head for the hills when his company of brigands disbanded rather violently.
Lex Tosh: Merchant
About: A fat, greedy man in his mid-40s. He wore a gun on his back he didn't know how to use; he found better protection with his bodyguards, Dexter and Evelyn. His own obsession with cleanliness kept him out of the dungeons, but he was drawn to the Estate in the first place to peddle wares to desperate civilians.
Death: In the tavern, Tosh was caught in the cross-fire of a gunshot and died without much ceremony.
Vivan Dubose: Vestal
About: Vivian was an older woman who arrived at the Estate seeking to become a martyr; she wished to die for a righteous cause and evoke heroics in others. This endeavor lasted all of one in-roleplay day and a half before she was killed.
Death: A gargoyle slew her on her way out of the abbey.
Florence "Crowgazer" Novel: Plague Doctor | Read the full character sheet here!
About: Florence is an English-Italian scientist, introduced at the same time as Vivian but much longer-lived, with no sense of humor and even worse social skills. She's creepy, unsettling, and greasy, and she wears her plague doctor's mask constantly. However, she's entirely devoted to the care of her patients, and the research to better their health. Recently, she's been learning to embrace more of the pleasurable aspects of life: friendship, family, hobbies and the like.
Lorenzo Morra: Vestal
About: Lorenzo came to the Estate to heal it, supporting by his long-time companion, Bjarke, whose leprosy Lorenzo prevented from worsening. Following the disappearance of Bjarke, Lorenzo searched for him and uncovered the secrets of an unliving knight, and sacrificed himself to save a child.
Magic kept him alive long enough to make it to the sanitarium.
This was when Bjarke came for him. Lorenzo disappeared, and was never seen again in the Hamlet.
Darlene Osgood: Guard
About: Tall, broad-shouldered guardswoman. Good-natured, but stupid. These qualities lead to her finding herself in trickier situations than she'd like to be in, but she always endeavored to help those who needed it most, even at extreme risk to herself. She formed close relationships with the other guards, and managed to survive and quell a raid on the Hamlet.
Death: Invading undead caught her neck in a mancatcher, which, when she fell some distance off a wall, formed a fatal combination of a noose and a pike.
Herville Pinel: Guard
About: Scruffy man with terrible luck with women. Consequently, he was always nervous around them. He guarded the sanitarium after an incident, when he wasn't off drinking, and found the whole thing to be rather uneventful in comparison to patrolling the Hamlet's perimeter.
Death: He was murdered and his body was hidden beneath a stairwell.
Milo Quinton: Occultist
About: Quinton was a small, well-groomed man with a terrible secret: he murdered his younger, bastard half-sister in revenge for his mother's infidelity. This bloodshed helped his research into the arcane; he sacrificed the girl in exchange for dark power. This drove him away from home, as it should, and into the company of monster-hunters, where he was best able to supply his expertise and knowledge.
He still lingers around the Hamlet, but I haven't really enjoyed roleplaying this character.
Meriwether: Guard
About: Meriwether is an illiterate, teenage boy. He, along with his older brother, are guards at the Hamlet.
The nature of Meriwether's job means that he often finds himself in over his head, though he tries his best to serve the Hamlet's people well, while also appeasing the Warden of the Dark.
Hadrian "Ponytail" Foster: Hunter | Read the full character sheet here!
About: A self-denying Frenchman, a motherless Ponytail was raised by a group of English hunters. They roamed the plains of the savanna for glory, but when Ponytail betrayed their honor code, he was exiled until he could return with a suitably impressive trophy to prove his hunting prowess.
Ponytail thought that the best place to find such a thing was at the Darkest Estate.
Alphonse Escarra: Man-at-Arms | Read the full character sheet here!
[Alphonse is not my character; Hopper has told me to roleplay him while she is away to avoid chatlock and also to continue his character.]
About: A Spaniard born without an arm, Alphonse strives to improve his fighting skill through any means possible, while still maintaining morals and character that will impress his father. Alphonse is religious, honest, and always strives to do good by his father and the Light.
Horatius Burana: Singer | Read the full character sheet here!
About: Horatius lived the life many dreamed of: he was beloved by many for his voice in the great Opera of Carmina, and he enjoyed a life in the lap of luxury for all his days. When he began to grow old, his Wife passed peacefully in her sleep, and Horatius realized that, while he had always sung the tales of greater men, he had no tales to sing of himself. He sought out the Darkest Estate to write his own story, one that his children and grandchildren could be proud of.
