Sister Charissa 'Charis' Colter
Resolve level: 1
-Appearance-
Age:18
Sex: Female
Physical Description: 4’9” 115lbs, wiry musculature, fair skinned, oval face, wide-set kindly cognac eyes (see first attached picture), chestnut brown wavy hair that stops just below her shoulders (though she usually keeps her hair contained in a tight bun), small upturned nose, and full youthful lips. Charis sets a brisk pace with a quick and quiet “nurse’s walk.” Charissa has some mostly healed scars scattered across her body, the majority being byproducts of her injury-splitting ability, and are little more than pale pink or white marks, but she does possess a distinctive I-shaped hypertrophic scar on the underside of her left arm, a souvenir from her run-in with a (thankfully) rare form of intelligent undead called a Mohrg. The top set of the I's arms traverse the width of her wrist, while the bottom set of arms cover the area just above her elbow and the body of the I connects the two cross pieces.
Attire:
In-hamlet: A white nun’s habit and coif with a red monastic scapular (a sort of apron that covers the front and back of the wearer, but the sides remain open) and a black veil
Out of Hamlet:
A dull gray, close-fitting cloth-and-leather ensemble, with an attached gray leather hood, cloth face mask, and a dark gray thigh-length cloak connected to the armor’s pauldrons, and a pair of soft-soled gray calfskin boots
-Biography-
Quirks: Aural sensitivity (Sharp ears and a healthy sense of paranoia make for a tricky target to ambush) [“Shh… I hear something…”], Novice Anatomist (Knows many of the more obscure ‘soft spots’ on the Human body)[“He’s not going to last much longer. I nicked his brachial artery when he tried to clothesline me.”]
Synopsis:
Charis was supposed to have been sent to a Church-run sanatorium to the East, but a jealous and politically savvy Clergy member called in a few favors here, pulled a few strings there, and now Charis has been sent to the Darkest Estate woefully unprepared. Though maybe her non-clerical abilities will prove to be a boon.
Full:
Charissa first used her Injury-splitting ability on her childhood friends, speeding the healing of minor scrapes, bruises, and the occasional sprained wrist or ankle. Then one day, Charissa's father, a Ferrier, was doing a routine hoof trim and reshoeing on a horse. Suddenly, the horse became spooked, and lashed out at Mr. Colter, shattering his right arm. Charis doesn't quite remember the exact events that lead up to her using her injury-splitting ability on her father. But, she does remember waking up with her right arm in a cast, long after the sun had set. Word quickly spread throughout the river port city of Dunwall, Charissa's hometown and birthplace, about the 'miracle girl,' and people from the Church of Light soon began showing up and insisting that Charis would be better off living with the clergy
Charissa spent the next four years living at Dunwall Abbey on the outskirts of the city. Father Corsin was a firm believer in the idea that a shepherd did his best work amid his flock. So little Charis was still able to play with her friends that lived in Dunwall proper. Charis excelled at games like hide-and-seek, tag, and tree climbing, where she would take advantage of her smaller-than-average size. After a kidnapping attempt, one that Charis is unaware of due to plot's quick discovery, Father Corsin called upon his past life as a sneak thief to teach Charissa how to pick many of the commonly available locks. "There are people out there who will seek to contain you, Charis." Corsin once told Charissa, "They will seek to keep you and your healing hands to themselves. And if you know how to pick locks, Charis, you can make it harder for these people to contain you." It was not long after Father Corsin taught Charis everything he could remember about lockpicking that Charissa moved to the seaport City of Karnaka.
Charissa transferred to the Karnakan Clergy at the age of ten, and she quickly grew to hate it there. Mother Superior Dela ruled with an iron fist and viewed Charissa's power as something to be controlled. And to control Charissa's power, Dela first had to control Charissa.
The 'manacles' were implemented quickly. Charissa could leave the Cathedral proper, but only with an approved escort, and she couldn't go outside of the Cathedral District. Charis had to return to the Cathedral by five bells on the dot, or she would receive no dinner. 'Unseemly behavior,' which seemed to include any and all activities that the average child would engage in, was harshly punished with a sound caning. Charissa was also strictly forbidden from using her healing powers without direct supervision from Mother Dela. All of these new constraints on what Charissa could do, where she could go, and even who she could heal, chafed on the little nun.
In response to the crackdown, Charis started acting out. Charissa would do everything in her power to give her minders the slip while out on walks. And after curfew, she would use her stealth, lockpicking, and the climbing skills she had gained from tree-climbing, to leave the Cathedral grounds. Of course, Charissa's mostly self-taught techniques were only on par with a skilled novice. And about a year into her time in Karnaka, her escape attempts started failing more and more often. Enter Bernard Kenbreak, Career Theif.
The first words Bernard ever said to Charissa were "A lockpicking Sister; now I've seen everything.". Charis had just turned eleven years old and was being stymied by a 'new' type of lock that Mother Dela had installed on the side doors that lead outside of the Cathedral. Amused by the little sister's fumbling attempts at picking, to Bernard, a rudimentary lock, he decided to show the nun how a real sneak-thief picks a lock. The last thing Bernard said before leaving the Cathedral was a suggestion to poke around a particular bakery in the Cathedral district and to ask about their Nicholas tarts. Charis was quick to follow Bernard's instructions, and the unlikely pair has gotten on like brother and sister ever since.
Charissa was introduced to Alchemy when one of the more bookish members of Bernard's guild mistook her for an apprentice trying to skip out on a lesson. After being effectively bullied into the classroom, Charis quickly discovered that she had an almost instinctual understanding of Alchemy. Charissa quickly caught up to the other apprentices, before swiftly surpassing them. After that, Charis began to create new variations on known alchemical recipes, as well as entirely new creations. It was after an attempted mugging for the more expensive alchemical components she was carrying that Charissa endeavored to learn some method of self-defense, turning to one of her few friends at the Cathedral, one Brother Paul Arkwright, a former Crusader.
Charissa honestly doesn't know very much about the man who taught her the subtle art of wielding a short sword. He turned up shortly after Brother Paul exhausted what he could teach about swordplay without veering into a style that was physically incompatible with his student. The man was of average height and weight; he wore brown and black leathers with an attached brown cloth hood, much like Bernard did when he was on the job, but instead of a cloth face mask, the man wore a blank black mask. The man said that Charis could call him Gorsin and that Bernard had asked him to teach Charis a little about fighting with a shortsword. Gorsin went on to explain Charis not only how to use a short sword to defend herself, but also how to fight back with it.
Misc. Notes: Charis can ‘split’ the severity of an injury between her patient and herself, or herself and willing volunteers, as long as she (and the volunteers) are in physical contact with the patient. She can only do this once per patient per 24 hours.
-Skills & Equipment-
Weapons: A simple steel short sword with a depiction of a blank black mask with a piece of clear Beryll set into the right eye socket on the crossguard, plus a wide variety of tonics and toxins stashed in various pouches and pockets on her person.
Armor: Grey leather and cloth ‘prowler’s wear,’ complete with matching soft-soled calfskin boots, attached cape, hood, cloth face mask, and lots of handy pouches and pockets.
Other gear: A handbag with various mundane medical supplies, a small lockpicking kit, and a coil of sturdy rope.
Poison List
Diplopic Serum (35 doses in storage)
Application type: Injury
Effects: A failed attempt at a treatment for cataracts, this pink aromatic serum inflicts double vision and nausea on the affected target for about ten minutes. (Applies Accuracy debuff)
Fumble Tongue (34 doses in storage)
Application type: injury
Effects: Adapted from an ingested poison called 'Three Sheets,' which the Karnakan Thieves guild uses to make troublesome noblemen seem like they'd had too much to drink; Fumble Tongue causes the affected to have muddled thoughts and slurred speech for roughly five minutes. (applies Stun status)
Mohrg’s Kiss
(Work in Progress)
Application type: Injury
Effects: Charis planned on this concoction to be her 'End of Apprenticeship' project. Charissa began developing this poison after she had a close encounter with the undead monster of the same name. When completed, this dusky purple serum will cause localized paralysis of the skeletal muscles on the affected limb, with an accompanying sensation of cold numbness. These effects last for about 3 rounds of combat before another dose needs to be administered. (applies a Speed + Dodge debuff if the affected limb is a leg, or a Damage + accuracy debuff if the affected limb is an arm.)
