FULL NAME
Toustain Royer
(Toast, to friends)
Resolve level:
0 (new to server)
-Appearance
Age:
28 (29 as of Vestalia event)
Sex:
Cis female
Physical Description:
5'2 and of light proportion from a vestal's meager diet. She holds herself with a confidence that is half-faked and half-earned, a sense of anticipation constantly present in the tenseness of her body. Her skin is a middling brown with a smattering of freckles just about everywhere, with a slight inclination to ruddiness. She sports a shock of dark brown, perpetually greasy looking locks that would have a wave and curl to her mid-neck - instead it hangs like limp seaweed that begs for soap. She has olive green eyes that are easy to read, a rather strong jaw for a small woman, a small nose, and full lips for doing nothing but praying, thank you very much. Her hands reflect that she is used to the light physical labors asked of her at the abbey, but nothing particularly strenuous... yet. Her fingernails are trimmed, but never feel fully clean. Maybe that's just her.
Attire:
Indigo vestal's robes, bronze trim hand-quilted into diamond shapes (done by the superior of the abbey as a parting gift). They are fairly well-kept and traveled in. Brown leather walking boots, simple but servicable.
-Biography
Quirks:
Positive:
Steady: She tries to keep her head in stressful situations, sometimes being the voice of reason within a group.
Clutch Hitter: When she starts out, she starts out strong, though she peters out over time or if she's injured.
Negative:
Winded: Once she's hit badly, it can be hard for her to regain her footing.
Night Blindness: Unused to lack of light, Toustain finds it hard to navigate in the dark.
Flagellant (will flagellate for stress relief)
Backstory Synopsis:
Was sent to an abbey from a young age. After serving for twenty three years, she ventured out to serve the greater world more directly, both with healing touch and mace's strike.
Full Backstory:
Toustain was the second and youngest daughter of a serf couple. Her younger years were filled with the usual hardships, but she was lucky enough to get through the dangerous years and enter into life proper. As the youngest daughter, when she was about five years old, she was sent to an abbey of the Light. There was no dowry for her as well as little use for her, so it was agreed it might be the best way that she could live a life of worth and perhaps even advance her position above her parents'.
Toustain served the abbey for some twenty three years. Her days were filled with rigorous service: praying, cleaning, keeping her abbey's lantern lit, and suppressing any feelings of joy she might have felt well up in her chest (I kid... kinda). She helped to maintain the physical abbey where she served by learning some rudimentary carpentry from one of the priests, and got along well with the other Sisters, for the most part. She saw the pain and suffering of the world as it came to the abbey - people who claimed sanctuary to flee mobs, the monstrous disease of leprosy, and she administered last rites to both soldiers and the elderly.
Though her place was firmly in her faith, she felt that the ventures out to serve the people suited her far better than staying at the abbey and waiting for something to happen.
And once she realized that, there was a desire in her that she could not quell. She yearned for action, for travel - for something new. Perhaps for something dangerous. She felt that she was destined for some more holy work, even if it was tainted with blood. She had seen soldiers, after all, and heard their tales. Faith was not only found within safe, stone walls. Toustain left the church to venture through the land. Along the way she heard of her ultimate destination: the Darkest Estate. Once its name was in her ear, she set out to find it. And find it she would.
Misc. Notes: (Special items, notable scars, scents, how they walk, or talk, etc.)
Items:
-Brown sackcloth bag
-Rosary and flame pendant
-Personal oil lamp (for keeping the flame wherever she goes - a cherished item)
-Small notebook/journal
-Pencil
-Small knife (for sharpening pencil)
Mannerisms and Misc
-She smells slightly of church incense, candle wax, and bread (she bakes in the abbey when possible to provide for those staying there)
-Toustain is softer spoken and prone to hesitation before action. She's a bit paranoid about being perceived as unbefitting a vestal's robes or duties - high standards beget pressure.
-She expresses her opinions, but often in roundabout or softened ways that might make her appear mercurial or fickle.
-She habitually scratches herself, especially on her upper arms, leaving small patches, appearing not unlike a rash. Wearing robes with longer sleeves helps to curb this a bit.
-Toustain doesn't feel comfortable sleeping in a nice bed, nor indulging often in luxurious things - fine wines, rich foods, etc. The guilt that follows, she finds, is hardly worth the pleasure of the moment.
-She abstains from romance and sexual relations, though craves the former (and has no idea how to begin to deal with the latter). She considers her age to be a boon in this case - she thinks herself to be too old to be suitable to marry, and uses that as a shield against any feelings that might blossom into affection. Besides, her vow holds her for thirty years - she has seven more to go. By the time her debts are up, she reasons, the window for romance will have passed permanently.
-Since her parting from the abbey, there is a definite sense of loneliness in how she conducts herself with others. She yearns to be part of social circles, and can flourish within them! She enjoys conversation and humor, and has no problems with engaging in gossip (as long as she's not the one sharing it). She makes eye contact during conversations and is a very good listener.
-She is classically trained in playing harp, but does not own one.
-Her favorite once-a-year treats are sweet-sour fruit tarts and candied orange peel.
-Toustain is literate in English, French, and Latin. Latin for holy texts, French, for the home, and English for business. Or at least, that's what the nuns always said.
-Skills & Equipment
Weapons:
-Rusted Mace, not yet used to an extent where she feels comfortable hefting it. The handle is wrapped in a rough linen that covers a prayer written onto a slip of paper that she keeps against the metal.
-Holy Book (if it counts) is well-paged-through, with earmarks on her favorite psalms and passages. Sections are carefully boxed in lightly with pencil and certain sentences circled.
Armor:
-Her armor is bronze in color, and doesn't quite fit. She's in dire need of a visit to the blacksmith. The pieces themselves were acquired during the three years she spent on her journey to the Hamlet, gifted by a generous, retired soldier. They are dented, chipped, and they show a kind of seasoned gravitas that the woman wearing them does not fully deserve. They chafe. She really wishes they wouldn't.
Other gear:
Mentioned more in personal items - she doesn't have much to her name, sadly.
Strengths:
Toustain has a strong sense of faith and hope. Her devotion to the Light and its message is sometimes both a boon and a curse, but more likely than not it shows itself to be a source of encouragement. She is faster than she is strong, and eating bread and water isn't going to help her with her gains goals. But goals she does have, and that does count for something. She is determined, is a truly genuine person, and isn't afraid to admit when she's wrong. She can and will learn from others when given the chance, and while she isn't as adaptable on-the-go, if given the chance to learn in a controlled setting, she can truly develop some neat skills.
Weaknesses:
Toustain suffers from not being the most seasoned of fighters. Her expertise is in healing, but she has an impulse to be aggressive when it comes to battle. Standing in the back and waiting for someone to get hurt doesn't feel quite right to her, despite the fact her strength doesn't call for her to bash at every opportune moment. However, she has a tendency to hesitate, or at worst, freeze, which can make or break certain situations. Slight paranoia around her standing as a vestal causes her to occasionally lash out at others in a defensive manner. When those around her speak badly of the Light or express that they're non-believers, it can definitely impact her opinion of them - certainly not enough to deny them manners or healing, but enough to make a difference. Her devotion to the Light is a bit blind and can lead her to judgment where she shouldn't. The text of the Flame is her guiding light, and if you can justify an action with a verse, she's likely to go along with it. She's curious despite her devotion to her faith, which can be a bit of a double edged sword. She's found herself in the past inquiring into things she ought not to, which would have caused some friction in her home abbey if they were aware of the situation. Toustain has also arrived in the Hamlet with no magical ability whatsoever - the offensive and healing capabilities of her class that rely on magic are barred from her, at least for now. It will take a lot for her to unlock those skills.
