Backstory Synopsis: A young, largely untested soldier eager for battle, and to prove to his worth to the world and more importantly, his family back home.
Full Backstory: Born in the middle of England to two low-level aristocrats, His father being a general of some renown (Gerard Francis Knight) and having a mother well-regarded for her both her beauty and her wit. (Lucile Vanderhalk) From birth Giles seemed poised to follow the path his father tread: one of admirable service to Crown and Country, resulting in a handsome pension and a generous estate upon retirement. Giles however, showed little of the temperament required for soldiering, being in possession of vigor though with little discipline to temper it.
He had some spark of his mother’s cleverness though hardly any of his father’s strategic acuity.
Giles was sent south at the age of 10 to receive a formal education in preparation to join the officer corpse at the age of 16. He was average in his studies but showed no serious devotion to the art of war as his father had, much to the latter’s grave disappointment. Graduating 55th in class of 100 students, at age 18 he was officially made an officer and began his service to the King. He served for three years, performing dutifully if not particularly keenly, seeing combat only a handful times and each time he came out the other side more or less unscathed. His service warranted promotion to Ensign and he was given post in a small fort in the north of France, an outpost for troops to resupply when they were not fighting in one of the endless wars which took place between the English and the various realms of the mainland.
During this time he heard of a small village nearby. It was told the place was ungovernable: the woods around it playing host to dozens of roving bands of merciless and brutal bandits, as well as other things unnameable and indescribable. These dark whispers intrigued the young man and so he made plans to step down from his post at the fort and make his way south towards the town. Gathering what supplies the fort would spare for him, and scrounging what few maps there were of the area, he packed his saddlebags and headed out, unsure of what precisely he might find though judging himself capable enough to handle whatever it was and earn his own renown in the process, free from the shadow of his father’s glory.
Misc. Notes:
Giles is highly sensitive to proper manners and etiquette and will feel the need to defend his honor, if he feels it has been insulted in some way.
Giles is called ‘Jules’ by friends and family.
Something of a germaphobe, Giles is easily put off by grime and offal.
-Skills & Equipment
Weapons:
A single-shot flintlock pistol of around .50 caliber.
A barely-used cavalry saber, about 3 feet/1 meter long with a brass handle and the letters ‘GJK’ stamped on the bottom of the pommel.
Armor:
A French-style steel breastplate and a brass helmet, looking like a French ‘Cuirassier’ style helmet only with cheek-plates and a high central ridge. Though not technically armor, Giles does also wear a pair of thick leather gloves which could offer some limited protection, the same going for his boots.
He also wears a brass gorget around his throat, a metal necklace with an attached piece that resembles a shield, about five inches long, on which is a a full sun in the middle, flanked on either side by olive leaves, on the left is a dove with its wings fully out stretched in flight, on the right there is a lion with one paw raised and roaring proudly. Beneath the picture, there are the words:
EX TENEBRIS : LVX
When wearing both the breastplate and the gorget, the gorget fits over-top of the breastplate and is then tied in place with leather straps.
Other gear:
Strengths: A man undaunted by adversity and unbowed by terror, Giles will never back down from a fight, regardless of the wisdom of doing so. Well versed in high-society, he can be charming and personable given the right circumstances, and will do his best to abide by a code of honor in all situations, even when it may result in more harm than good. Though he may be hesitant at first, once his trust has been won, this man is a steadfast friend and ally. Outgoing by nature, he will naturally look for companions.
Weaknesses: Pampered and proper, Giles may have a hard time adjusting to the rough-&-tumble world of the Hamlet. His inexperience in regards to real combat and his total ignorance in all things arcane mean that he is totally unprepared for what awaits him in the dungeons, and this alone may prove disastrous for him. Giles can be very reckless and end up over his head, facing down opponents superior to him in every way, or otherwise starting trouble that is unneeded except to save face.
Skills: Giles trained though hardly excels in hand-to-hand combat armed and with a sword, though no other melee weapons that require any real training to use (halberds, morning-star, great-swords, ect)
He is also a decent shot with a pistol, though only up to about 10 yards or so.
Through his military career he has some minor tactical skills as well as basic knowledge on camping in the wilderness.
