Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.):
How do I begin?
Q: Can I join in now?
A: You can join the roleplay once you make a character sheet, and it is accepted.
Q: What is expected of me as a roleplayer?
A: A basic grasp of grammar, as well as readable formatting. This includes knowing when to close a sentence, capitalize letters, and spell correctly. Make line breaks at appropriate times to keep your post readable and organize.
If you’re having troubles or feel like your post is lacking in substance; try explaining the inner reasonings behind a character's actions or words. Explain how they’re seeing the situation. If you haven’t already; detail how a character is executing an action, and what they or the item looks like.
Things like color, texture, and metaphors go a long way. It helps to write these details as your character would interpret them.
Just as well; be sure to keep your writing open for character’s to interact with. Avoid presuming what a character cannot do. Write an action that allows for a response from the other person.
Q: Where should I start?
A: Start by reading the rules, if you haven’t already. Then go and create a character here [insert link]. Once your character is created, and accepted by the Mods or other respective members, you may enter the RP.
The best option to start is by having your character enter the courtyard in the carriage that brings new person’s to the Hamlet. From there, they may wander the Hamlet to their heart’s content.
Making a Character:
Q: What are the rules for character creation?
A: Those rules will be on the Basic Rules. If you have further questions, you can post them in the FAQ or you may contact the Moderators directly.
We will not review unfinished character sheets.
Q: Where can I find the template for the character sheet?
A: You can find it on this page.
Q: Do we have to use characters from the game?
A: No; though you can use them to get an idea of what your character should look and act like. What their background should be, etc. etc.
Q: When can I start roleplaying?
A: You may introduce your character to the Hamlet once One Moderator has given Temporary Acceptance on your sheet. After all Moderators have Accepted your character, they may go on any expedition they wish.
Q: When will my character be accepted?
A: Depending on the quality and quantity of your Character Sheet; it can take anywhere from three hours to several weeks. It’s important to remember that the Moderators of this site have other responsibilities to attend to.
However, we will do our best to try and at least Temporarily accept your Character Sheet within a week.
The more characters you make, the less of a priority they will have in terms of acceptance. Just as well, making a quality Character Sheet is much more interesting to read than a quick and slapdash one.
Expeditions and Dungeons:
Q: How do I start an expedition?
A: You can start an expedition whenever you wish; though you should have a solid party of heroes before expediting.
Q: What is a DM/GM?
A: A DM is a Dungeon Master, much the same as a GM is a Game Master. They are two sides of the same coin: they are the immediate and all-controlling masters of an Expedition/Dungeon. Only overruled by Moderators.
A DM will coordinate how an Expedition runs in its entirety, this includes but is not limited to:
Rules of Combat
Dungeon Layout
Stat-logging [HP, Stress, etc.]
Q: Who should be the DM/GM of my Expedition?
A: Anyone who is willing! They may or may not have a character on the expedition, themself.
Q: Can I DM an expedition?
A: Of course, as long the other players are willing!
Q: How do I format my expedition thread?
A: First, title your expedition something that could represent its purpose. For example, a mission to collect fungi in the Weald might be called “The Moss Mission.” Then, list the characters present in the mission.
For example: “The Moss Mission” | Alice, Bob, and Carol
For the following posts, you will describe the setting and the dungeon, and narrate the events that follow at your choosing.
Navigating the Hamlet:
Q: What buildings are there in the Hamlet?
A: There are the standard ones seen in the game, which have their respective threads: The Sanitarium, Tavern, Abbey, the Guild Hall, and the Graveyard. The Survivalist’s Camp and the Nomad Wagon will be roleplayed in the Town Square thread, along with other interactions that take place in the Hamlet’s streets.
Q: What is the upgrade status of the Hamlet?
A: Assume that all buildings are fully upgraded.
Q: What about districts?
A: For now, Crimson Court content will not be implemented.
Interacting:
Q: How do I interact with other characters?
A: You can just skim the thread and find idle characters lying around, or you can make a post on the OOC or in the Discord chat to see if there are any willing players with free characters.
Q: Why won’t anyone interact with me?
A: Sometimes it can be difficult to get an interaction in! Other players might be busy or inactive, and characters might already be in ongoing interactions. Be patience and keep an eye open for other bored players.
Q: What if I don’t want to interact with a certain player?
A: First, let the mods know that you don’t want to interaction with this other person, and explain why. There will likely be a discussion to see if the conflict can be resolved, but you two will be advised to avoid each other’s characters in settings, and to keep interactions to a minimum.
Setting, Time Period and Laws:
Q: What location is this in?
A: Red Hook has been purposefully vague about the location of the Estate, but in the roleplay, it is generally assumed to be somewhere in Northwestern Europe.
Q: What time period is it in?
A: Again, this is also very nebulous, although the latest referenced in-game is from the mid 1700s-- with the exception of medical technology, which is comparatively very advanced for this setting (a cure for syphilis, depression, anxiety, etc.).
Naturally, it can vary, and assume that technologies and cultures from one region in the world may be more advanced than technologies and cultures in other regions.
Q: Are there laws in the Hamlet?
A: Yes! The Hamlet is absolutely not lawless.
Q: What is illegal?
A: At the basic level, murder, assault, rape, and theft are against the law and will be enforced respective to their severity.
Q: How are the laws enforced?
A: Characters may report crimes to the guards in the guild hall, where the criminal will be jailed. Keep in mind that getting caught committing a crime could very well be character-ending, involving at least one of the following: lengthy jail sentences, crippling limbs, penal expeditions, or executions.
Miscellaneous:
Q: My question isn’t on here!
A: The majority of our OOC interactions take place on our Discord chat! There are people from across multiple different timezones who will be able to help you.
While we have an OOC section, it is infrequently monitored. It's also barrels of fun on Discord! You don't even need to download a program; you can chat right from your browser if you'd like.
