Age: 25

Physical Description:
Aurora Is a woman of modest proportion. She stands at 5’8” tall and 140 pounds, with average bust and slightly wider hip. Her head is shaved to accommodate the wig she wears daily, but her natural color is a dull, dusty brown. Her dark brown eyes reflect little light, and in most cases, seem identical to her pupil. She has skillful hands with dulled nails in order to make the playing of her hurdy gurdy easier, as well as pleasuring those she seeks out bed with.
Attire:
Balancing courtwear with streetwear, she wears a strangely mismatched ensemble. Her upper bodice, adorned with some silk and beading in white and gold styles with olive silk, suggests she’s going somewhere rather important. Her pants, simpler and with leather patches over both thighs, suggest that perhaps she’s going somewhere to work. Her pants are tucked into boots that near reach her mid-thigh where the pants show. She sometimes wears a black capelet that sports a hood, but she rarely puts it up. She of course wears her wig at nearly all times. She wears a half-mask on her face in a venetian style, and beneath the ridge of the mask lies, usually, a wicked sort of smile. Aurora stains her lips red in order to accentuate the only fully visible part of her face besides her eyes, which usually go unadorned. She wears a short wig in bone-white, teased upwards until it looks near as if her head was set aflame.
-Biography
Quirks:
Evasive: Aurora has slipped through a couple sets of fingers before, and has no intention of being held accountable for anything, anytime soon.
Burdened: Aurora’s instrument is heavier than most jesters’ and impedes her travel speed.
Sadistic: Aurora takes pleasure in inflicting more emotional pain onto others than physical. Making people her friends, and them doing as she says, gives her a sense of superiority. But there’s nothing quite like laying someone low who deserves it.
Backstory Synopsis:
Once a low entertainer of a Venetian Court, her hubris and mockery drew the ire of one of her greatest patrons. Now, she wishes to set that ire back upon them – and there is no better way to do that than by doing it tenfold.
Full Backstory:
Aurora was born into a mid-range Venetian family. Her access to education focused into the realm of music, where she found success with a few instruments, including violin and lute, but she drifted towards one in particular: the hurdy gurdy. It was a unique instrument, able to provide backing to its own songs, making the player independent. And in her youth, this greatly appealed to her.
She invested her time into the study of music and soon started composing her own songs – nothing complicated, but ditties about her home, her family, and the surrounding city. Her tutor made sure she understood the structures of music, and she was able to take notes from the air and put them onto paper when asked with increasing reliability as she practiced. Growing up in Venice meant that Aurora got to see a great many things – traders, peasants, travelers, and figures of authority. And she knew, of course, of court jesters, who sang and entertained and poked fun at ever available opportunity. She thought this was of course the perfect route for herself, and she was right.
She donned a mask at the age of 17 and set out to do work befitting of her new role. Her parents were satisfied with this career path, given that their elder son was already wed and Aurora still acted perfectly well in good company. They thought that it’d be no issue still getting their daughter wed and bed when the time came.
Aurora spent some of her time seeking out a place in court, but more and more time with peasant folk. She found with her education and charms she could sometimes get favors that she otherwise could not. Emboldened by the mask-given anonymity, she began to exploit and mock some who she had come to know. She found herself more and more often within taverns and brothels, playing and making fun of those who frequented there. But when she was accepted at court, things took a different turn.
In front of the gentry she sang of the peasants – in front of the peasants she sang of the gentry. Cruel, insulting, and always in good spirits. She flashed smiles and took a wig for her own, teasing it high as it could go until she felt it was appropriate of her station. Her sweet songs of her childhood still existed, but that’s just what they felt to her – songs of childhood. She was older now, and her tunes were bawdy and bloody, fiction and fact intermingled, and she relished in making people listen, in making them embarrassed, in making them pay attention to what she had to say. Because if they didn’t, perhaps they’d find themselves the subject of her song instead, characterized dumb-of-ear or slow of mind. It lasted four good and long years, her skill and reputation growing, and she was spurred on in her sadistic tendencies with every bar that she played.
Her two worlds collided one night when a member of the gentry heard her with peasants – and heard the awful mockery she was making of the high member of the local court. When reported, she was thrown out of her court, and when news spread of the how, the secrets of her success came out. The peasants turned their backs on her for crimes against them, and so too did the court. And Aurora found herself with little friend, and littler coin.
But: salvation came in the darkest of places. Rumors flew of a Hamlet with songs so terrifying they’d drive men mad. A siren whose song was irresistible. A pirate, nothing but bones, who could fiddle so proficiently that his instrument took up flame despite being waterlogged. And Aurora constructed a plan for herself.
She would steal the songs of this Hamlet for her own. Collect them, transpose them, learn from them. She had nothing to fear – only the sinless feared madness. And when she had taken all that she could…. She would return. If they would not adore her for her music, if they would not recognize that she only reflected the disgusting nature of their own souls, she would drive them into the depths where they could see it. She would bless them with some musical madness. And she, with twisted smile and great ambition, began her venture to this Hamlet. Songbook in hand, quill and ink in her satchel, and hurdy gurdy slung across her back, she figured herself rather ready indeed.
Misc. Notes: (Special items, notable scars, scents, how they walk, or talk, etc.)
-Aurora phases between the two old aspects of her life even as she walks new streets. She is able to mingle freely with commoners, though most of the time she likes the company of more refined folk.
-Aurora powders her wig and therefore carries the smell of it with her most times
-She greatly enjoys putting on shows and enticing people to dance. There’s nothing quite like being the infectious beginning of a revel.
-She will play slower and more lovely songs to brothel maidens and men in hopes of getting a discount on their skills. She likewise uses this tactic on anyone in order to get something out of them. She’s fallen in love (as a hoax) with quite a few people before in order to cheat them out of money or gifts.
-Skills & Equipment
Weapons:
- A hurdy gurdy is her chosen weapon (you can watch a video of it used in appropriate styling HERE . Her hurdy-gurdy has a strap affixed to the instrument that allows her to take it mobile, though it is definitely an instrument that is better played sitting down. She’s learned to adapt.
-a dirk of simple but useful construction. She does not use it often, and she wishes it was a better looking thing than it is.
Armor:
Negligible. Silks do not true armor make.
Other gear:
-A satchel with her family’s seal – a bird snatching a snake from the ground – embroidered into the back paneling.
-A songbook of handwritten tunes to riff off of. Some of these are stolen, some are arrangements, and some are of her own creation. She sees no reason not to use another’s work when there are only so many notes in the world.
-150 gold
-Inkwells and pens for the transcribing of music
Strengths:
Aurora is a woman of dexterity and adroitness. She has great skill on the hurdy-gurdy, but also can play violin and lute. She, however, sees no interest to further her musical skills on the latter two instruments, as she considers her own instrument innately superior. Her charming nature makes her easy to be around, and her energy a welcome companion in darker times. She has already given up on herself – she knows she can never truly return to her family – and her willingness to just get the fuck out there and do it sometimes leans in her favor. She plays with infectious passion, and would be a good addition to a high-stress dungeon.
Weaknesses:
Aurora has a keenness for madness, and is well and truly overconfident in her ability to take down the melodies of the maddening monsters while resisting true madness herself. She is only mortal, and if she is driven mad, she will prove herself the same as the ones she hoped to victimize. She is willing to put herself in a terrible position for revenge, and shows that her priorities aren’t truly where they ought to be. She makes decisions without thinking about their full consequences and is a polarizing woman: people either are usually very fond of her, or very not-fond at all. Aurora is weak of limb, and having no armor is not to her benefit. She is weak to the pleasures of the flesh, though if you asked her, she wouldn’t call it a weakness at all. She looks down upon the pious and holier-than-thous, and sees no reason for her to think about settling down. Her apathy for others makes it hard for her to connect with them, but she thinks holding them at a fair distance is just fine.
