John himself stands slightly above your average person in height and is quite well shaped, strong and muscular, without looking too bulky.

Having just arrived at the Hamlet, John doesn't have much of a choice but to wear the things he took with him on his latest mission. Thus, he still has his beloved armor on and a simple blue shirt under it, with a worn leather belt around his waist. The leather boots on his feet are well spent after days on the road, and his plated trousers are no better. As mentioned before, John's nose and lower face are concealed by a blue bandana, which is his most iconic garment and one he is never seen without.

Quickdraw & On Guard: His time in the criminal underworld has taught him to always be on guard and keep his weapons within second's reach.

Faithless: Having long ago lost all faith in the goodwill of higher beings, John looks down upon the religious, perceiving them as weak and ignorant.
Kleptomaniac/Plutomania: Since youth, John has always been obsessed with the power of gold. The promise of riches and precious jewels lured him here, and thus he will use every opportunity to gain an extra. Likewise, some of the nicer things found in the dark depths sometimes "get lost" around him, if they were ever there to begin with that is.
War-torn (Damaged Knee): His years of battle and skirmish have taken their toll on his body, despite John taking care as best he can. The most serious damage he has received and the one which ails him the most is his fractured left knee, as it can cause him to stagger at crucial moments.

An infamous black market dealer known through the mainland, John used to be quite a powerful man in the criminal underworld. Unlike most in the business, he is known for his unyielding loyalty towards his customers and does all he can to keep his end of the bargain, although he would most certainly charge an extra for the problem.
Unfortunately for him, a new lord rose to power some time ago, a lord whose interests weren't exactly the same as his predecessor. Being a former lawman himself, he was far from content with the things he found to be lurking underneath the surface of his realm. Thus, the lord ordered a huge movement against organized crime and corruption, causing much unrest amongst those that preferred to stay in the shadows.
Having been away on a mercenary campaign, John returned only to find the smoking ruins of what was once his home. Learning that a certain someone had revealed him to the lord's men, he swiftly and mercilessly dealt with the traitor. But it was a bitter revenge, as the damage was already done, and thanks to the lord's efforts his network of connections was now in shambles.
With nothing to look forward to anymore, John salvaged what he could, tied up any loose ends and then took off to the road, confident that he would be back after some time when things started to calm down. Afterall, everyone could be bought at the end, that he knew for sure.
Misc. Notes:

Weapons:
Sawtoothed Longsword: John's most prized relic and his ever faithful companion, the sawtoothed longsword is a vicious weapon indeed. What it lacks in raw damage it more than makes up for in terms of intimidating look and the painful wounds it inflicts.
Steel Dagger: Easily accessible and lightweight, his dagger makes for an effective backup weapon if he loses his sword or needs to pierce some armor.
Armor:
Modified Platemail/Scalemail Hybrid: An essential item of his equipment, John takes great pride in this masterpiece of an armor and sometimes even wears it when not needed. Covering his shoulders and the upper left part of his chest with a solid steel plate, with light scales protecting the main body, the armor relies on a skillful use of a shield for frontal defense. The arms and sides are also protected with sheets of steels on the front, with scales and leather on the back, efficiently making the wearer more resistant to flank strikes and less likely of losing an arm.
In short, the mail hybrid is versatile and well crafted mix of plates, scales and leather; allowing John to shrug off most blows while still remaining somewhat mobile and comfortable.
Wooden Heater Shield: A basic heater shaped wooden shield, it's backside and edges reinforced with blue colored iron. A majestic brown eagle with it's wings spread out is painted on it, clutching a sword and wearing a blue bandanna around it's neck.
Scaled Leather Gloves(Worn): Long gloves made out of dark brown leather, covering well over the wrists with scales sewn in between. Well used.
Plated leather trousers (Damaged): A pair of leather trousers with three metal plates covering the legs and knees. It seems that the plates should be replaced soon, as they are bent and chipped from use.
Other gear:
Leather Belt: A thick leather belt lined with pockets of various sizes, along with one sheath on either side for his weapons.
Backpack: Rather spacious backpack, with straps to hold larger items on the outside.
Misc: Compass, tinderbox, medical supplies (bandages and herbal salves) few books, spare clothes, waterskin, food rations.
-Strengths and Weaknesses:
In combat, John is quite capable swordsman and usually has some dirty tricks up his sleeve to turn the odds in his favor. Able to take some beating thanks to his trusty shield, John will usually try to lock his enemies in a dance of death, confident that he can outlast them.
Mostly, he relies on a flurry of light strikes to put a constant pressure on his opponent, aiming at critical spots in an attempt to maim and bleeding his enemy out while reserving his own energy. But should the opportunity come or should John need to go on the defensive, he uses his shield to make an opening for devastating ripostes.
Sword and shield are not his only weapons though, as John is not shy at all to get up close and personal if need to be. Head-butting, tripping, elbowing or even classical sand throwing along with few wrestling tricks are all parts of his combat style. Not to mention that he often makes use of the environment around him in the most creative ways.
As his fighting style revolves around counterattacking and slowly whittling down the enemy in the meantime, his most challenging foes are those who remain calm, are able to shrug of his light blows and most importantly, make every hit count in order to minimize his chance for riposte.
Surprisingly for a criminal such as him, he strongly values honor in battle and will always meet those he fights against head on, for example he will not to take advantage of a distracted enemy if such situation arises. Though of course that varies, as sadly John has learned that there is not always a place for such niceties unfortunately and shamefully few respect the rules of a duel.
All in all, John is a balanced combatant with a sense for his surroundings that relies heavily on tiring the enemy out and making him go reckless in order to counter with a riposte.Thus, he is at his best exchanging fast, chaotic blows with a single opponent, always ready to make swift counterattack when an opening is present.
