BASIC RULES
1) Absolutely no bullying or harassment of any kindBe nice to each other.
We’re all here to enjoy ourselves and to roleplay.
This refers mostly to out of character talk. Your heroes can be as mean and nasty as you want, so long as it’s in character, and not influenced by Out of Character opinions.
Reports of harassment will be dealt with harshly. Bans and reports to respective authorities can and will be made.
2.) Keep it Tame
The Darkest Dungeon Roleplay allows 18+ depictions of violence and themes, though extremes such as sex and mutilation of respective organs must be kept in private messages.
Harsh language is permitted.
3.) Do not Godmod, Powerplay, Metagame, or otherwise Cheat
Essential, general, ground-rules for any RP: Your character is not invulnerable, they cannot dodge every attack, they cannot kill everything, they cannot know that one impossible weakness to an enemy.
There are exceptions, of course, but they are just that: exceptions.
Having infinite gold is considered under this rule; while we would prefer your character undergo the hardships of earning their keep, you can supply your own character with food and rooms and healing and armor repair with some unspoken funds to better guide your narrative. These services should be considered to be 'just-enough' to cover things:
Food should be unspecified slop that just fills the belly. Rooms should be spartan, healing is enough to put them back on the field, same with armor and weapon repair.
Food should be unspecified slop that just fills the belly. Rooms should be spartan, healing is enough to put them back on the field, same with armor and weapon repair.
4.) Respect the Narrative and Lore
While the lore and themes of The Darkest Dungeon vary from person to person, with many interpretations stemming from its natural emergent narrative, baselines and respect must be kept in mind.
Do not impose your own view on the lore on other characters; and avoid making concrete information outside of the Hamlet or basic reality.
Ie; Avoid mentioning any historical Crusades; refer to them generally as ‘The Crusade’ or ‘My First Crusade’. Avoid making antagonists that affect the Roleplay as a whole.
4.1) Maintain Chronological Logic
Your character must post as logical to time; your character cannot be in multiple expeditions at the same time. If you are seen participating in multiple expeditions you will be given a warning, and advised to seek an agreeable and tasteful means to remove your character from all expeditions sans 1. We (the Moderators) will assist you in seeking an agreeable and tasteful means to remove your character, but if we cannot, your character will be simply removed from the expedition.
Your character can post in multiple locations within the Hamlet, but only if your character is chat-locked or you have spoken with other members about having your character involved in different locations.
You must establish a coherent chronology to your character's actions.
Created characters that actively participate in the Hamlet must be Human. No Undead, Pigfolk, or Ghosts.
This does not mean that intractable or even friendly depictions of these characters can be made in Expeditions; but they cannot come to the Hamlet.
6.) New characters must begin at a resolve level of 0, or at a narrative equivalent.
Although heroes in the game can begin at up to veteran levels, in this roleplay, we would much rather see a character break and develop into a new role over time, rather than start immediately at it. Consequently, heroes must start as beginners to the terrors of the Estate. Note that they do not have to be a novice at combating mundane foes common to other areas.
6.1) Non-Player Characters can be created freely.
Within reason; as long as a character remains within the confines of the Hamlet, maintains a minor role (expositing, trading, defending, training, etc.), and stays generally within the established rules, there is no need for a sheet.
It is important to note that any NPC will be subject to immediate moderating if issues arise.
An NPC is not allowed to partake in expeditions, nor utilize Magic.
NPCs are to be considered static characters that fulfill a certain role in a community - a guard, a milkmaid, a farmer, a candlemaker. They can interact with PCs (of course) in positive and negative ways, but it would be understood that they function to push PCs and PC interactions forwards.
eg: A Guard discovers a nefarious plot and would then put up a bounty requesting PC's to help the investigation or seek the help of PCs within the Hamlet to bring the issue to justice.
This freedom of creation is based on trust, and can be taken away if abused.
(ie; Using an NPC to freely gift your character gold, gear, or services, etc. A PC may make a trade, buy services from, or exchange goods with an NPC, but only if the trade would be considered fair by two independent roleplayers. Deals of this nature will be moderated.)
Examples of NPCs being;
Hook - The local tavernkeeper with a burly oaken look and a quiet but hard measure.
Amgis - A hermit tailor with a fascination with moths.
Cait - A guardsman with a bushy moustache and a straightforward sense of duty.
7.) Magic must be thematic
There is very little and very specific magic used in The Darkest Dungeon. Any deviations from the established Light and Dark magic are often used by enemies alone. This must be kept in mind as you develop any sort of curse, spell, prayer, or general spell spitter.
Magic in The Darkest Dungeon demands a sacrifice. There is no magic in this game without sacrifice, no real magic, at anyrate.
For example: an Occultist may seal up and heal a wound, but inadvertently cause bleeding, internally or just from various orifices. The Vestal may incite a heal, at the cost of exhaustion and vulnerability; or some self-bound rule.
Remember that some in-game mechanics do not work quite as well when implemented in-roleplay. If you think a character’s magic could slightly be too powerful, it’s probably safer to take it down a notch.
